April is Autism Awareness Month!

April is Autism Awareness Month! what does that mean? it means that although autism affects 1 out of every 150 kids the majority of the world doesn't really know what autism is. before having this diagnosis for my son i was like everyone else. most people have the misconception that all autistic people are like Rain Man. this month autism groups are trying harder than other months to clear this misconception up. they also are trying to bring their studies to public attention, the cause of autism is still unknown and there is no known cure.

autism knows no social, racial, educational, financial or religious boundries. people from all different walks of life have been diagnosed with autism. autism is a spectrum disorder, meaning there are varying degrees of severity from very mild to sever.

my son is considered mild, but he also has a speech disability. i feel like that somewhere in his very complex mind there is a 'switch' and i continue to try to find a way to turn that 'switch' on. autism's main characteristic is that it affects how the person learns and understands. it has been described like this before; "the autistic mind has many broken 'wires' that aide in the learning process. in order to teach the autistic mind a new 'route' needs to be found." this is what i mean when i say i am searching for the switch. i can see that capabilities in my son, he is always right on the verge but unable to get all the way there. i continue to search.

please learn the warning signs of autism, because early intervention can mean the world to a child with autism.
